- search the London Gazette. You should be able to find the official record of commissioning and promotion for all officers in British service from 1665 on, + some info on secondment to non-regimental duties (e.g. staff appointments), official letters and despatches (in earlier conflicts, these are often published more or less contemporaneously, in the case of WWII, official despatches weren't published until the late 1940s). Prior to approx 1997 the pdfs have been created by scanning the original paper copies, and then using OCR to generate searchable text, so you're not 100% guaranteed to find what you're looking for. It's worth trying various combinations of full name, initials + surname, and for more recent issues, service number. {{LondonGazette}} can be used to provide consistent formatting, and ease future maintenance of references.
